Musical Imaginings
In this unique class, students will exercise their imagination and creativity while exploring improvisation, listening, composition, musical storytelling, and more. All skill levels and instruments, including vocals, are welcome. Rather than focusing on technique, we will develop artistry and ability to tell stories through music. For example, we will choose our favorite stories and improvise accompanying musical soundtracks. We will compose musical themes that represent characters, emotions, places etc. Visual art will also be included as we explore famous works of art as well as draw our own pictures and decide how to represent them with music.
I decided to create this class because of my passion for music, stories, and visual art. When I have had an opportunity to do these activities in my teaching, students and teachers alike have had a blast!
Activities include:
Musical improvisation to existing storybooks
Creating our own stories and music to go with them
Composing musical themes for people, places, and things
Representing famous works of visual art with musical improvisation
Drawing pictures and setting them to music
Creating collaborative music compositions
Deep listening
Musical games
Performance over Zoom
